How to add blue spirulina to smoothies?

Bue Spirulina is extracted from spirulina, a blue-green algae that is high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and protein. Spirulina also contains vital nutrients, such as beta-carotene, vitamin E and gamma linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid that supports joint and brain function, according to the Survey. Spirulina is available in tablet, capsule, flake or powder form. The powder is easiest to use when you blend spirulina into smoothies. Because it's algae, spirulina can be contaminated. Choose a reputable brand of spirulina powder. Spirulina blends well with fruit-based and juice-based smoothies, but it is difficult to blend with dairy-based smoothies.

Step 1

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of blue spirulina to a cup of fresh fruit juice. Blend the blue spirulina into the juice by stirring vigorously.

Step 2

Place one to two cups of ice in a blender. Add one to two cups of fresh-cut fruit, such as blackberries, strawberries or blueberries. Add one banana to thicken the smoothie.

Step 3

Mix the ice, fruit and banana mixture on high for 20 to 30 seconds or until smooth. Test the mixture for consistency -- it should be thick. Add more ice and banana to thicken.

Step 4

Pour the fruit juice and blue spirulina mixture into the blender. Mix the ice, fruit and banana mixture with the juice and blue spirulina mixture on low speed for 10 to 20 seconds, or until the mixture is fully blended.

Step 5

Pour into a glass and serve immediately.

Check with your doctor before using blue spirulina, because it can cause interactions with some medications.
